My Desktop OS: An upgrade from Edubuntu Breezy to Dapper
By Vincent Angus Williams - scribe63

To exploit one of the tenets of FOSS, a users freedom of choice, i exercise this right by using several Desktop Environments and Window Managers with the same or different Distros, for what they have to offer and or do best within a given criteria.

About Edubuntu
This article is based on my Edubuntu Workstation.
This was initially Edubuntu based on Ubuntu Breezy with added DEs and WMs Kubuntu, Fluxbox, Xfce, and E17.

Edutainment:
I fire up my browser and pointed it to my installations of Moodle and Schooltool, these programs and their databases were upgraded so i'm hoping all my data are intact, if any thing i've got backups.

Moodle.
I logged into moodle, as a user with administrator privileges and it finished upgrading it's modules and tables in it's database successfully. Previous courses were still intact.

Moodle

Schooltool

Schooltool.
For some reason i couldn't log into this application, got error "can't establish a connection to the server at localhost:7080".

Schooltool

Even after i did
sudo /etc/init.d/schooltool restart
* Restarting SchoolTool... [ ok ]

Zope3

But when i did,
sudo /etc/init.d/zope restart
* Zope3: no instances found.

Development:
I usually use a combination of Bluefish, Nvu, Quanta Plus, Konqueror, CSSED, gPHPEdit for developing and managing websites.
All of these programs loaded without any issue and were ready to put to use.
I definitely have to make time to continue learning and using other programs like Rekall, Tora, Eclipse, Netbeans, Java Studio Creator and possibly Gambas for other type of development work.

Linux Web Development Applications

Databases:
On this system i preferably use PostgreSql to store and retrieve data for applications like amarok, moodle, drupal, etc....., but most the time MySQL is the default for most web based apps so i use it also.
